Weekly Ellinwood Creek Cleanup and Maintenance

FOPHC volunteers meet every Saturday morning from 9 to 11 at varying locations along Ellinwood Creek for cleanup and removal of invasive plants. We have removed all stands of Arundo donax from Ellinwood Creek in Pleasant Hill. We continue to monitor the creek and remove regrowth. Future plans include the removal of other undesirable species and planting of other natives appropriate to this lovely riparian habitat.

Week of Caring

Pat von Behren led this event with two groups of volunteers provided by Wells Fargo Bank and another corporation. The groups removed trash and invasive plants. Since much of the Arundo has been cut down, they were able to begin removing the plant roots.

Community Service Day

Pleasant Hill’s Annual Community Service Day, September 15, 2007. A number of volunteers turned out to help Friends of Pleasant Hill Creeks with the Ellinwood Creek cleanup.

Boy Scout Centennial Creek Cleanup

August 4, 2007. Groups of volunteers removed trash and hauled cut Arundo to dupsters. The Boy Scouts will suppled a delicious barbecue for all after cleanup was completed.

Erosion Control Workshop

FOPHC held a free hands-on Erosion Control Workshop on Saturday, March 31, 2007 from 10am to 3pm, hosted by The Urban Creeks Council. We installed willow stakes and fascines in an eroding creek bank. The willow will grow and its roots will stabilize the soil while the above ground parts slow the water flow and trap sediment.

This arroyo willow on city property fell shortly before the Erosion Control Workshop. We harvested the branches up to 3 inches in diameter and used this material for fascines and live stakes.

Earth Day at Ellinwood Creek

On April 21, 2007 we hosted an Earth Day event. Many Boy Scout volunteers and their families helped remove trash and Arundo that had been harvested from the creek. Outback Steakhouse provided a BBQ lunch for the large crowd.
